John P. Humphrey (1905 - 1995)

Après avoir pratiqué le droit, John P. Humphrey est devenu professeur à l'Université McGill et a également enseigné aux universités de Gale, Western Ontario et de Toronto.

En 1946, le professeur Humphrey a été nommé le premier directeur de la Division des droits de l'homme au sein du Secrétariat de l'ONU, où il a été le principal rédacteur de la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme.

Il a travaillé avec l'ONU pendant 20 ans et, au cours de cette période, il a supervisé la mise en œuvre de 67 conventions internationales. Il a également  supervisé la rédaction des constitutions de plusieurs dizaines de pays.

En 1988, suivant le 40^e anniversaire de la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme, le professeur Humphrey a reçu le Prix des Nations Unies pour les droits de l'homme.

Il a pris sa retraite de l'ONU en 1966 et a repris sa carrière d'enseignant à l'Université McGill.

Jusqu'à sa mort en Mars 1995, le professeur Humphrey est demeuré actif dans la promotion des droits de l’homme au Canada et à travers le monde, notamment en participant à des commissions d'enquête internationales.

Il a travaillé comme directeur de la Ligue internationale des droits de l'homme et a servi comme membre de la Commission royale d'enquête sur la situation de la femme au Canada.

Il faisait partie de l'équipe qui a lancé Amnistie internationale Canada et a contribué à la création de la Fondation canadienne des droits de l'homme avec des collègues de l'Université McGill.

Parmi ses nombreuses distinctions, le professeur Humphrey a été fait Officier de l'Ordre du Canada en 1974, « en reconnaissance de ses contributions aux études juridiques et de sa réputation mondiale dans le domaine des droits de l'homme ».
