The Veil of the Ban: A Legal, Social & Political Discourse

In 2009, a public debate surrounding the issue of face covering in public spaces arose in France, specifically targeting the wearing of burqas and niqbas by French-Muslim women. This paper reviews responses for and against the ban, relevant articles within the European Convention on Human Rights, its relevant case law at the European Court of Human Rights, and conducts a legal analysis of the recent Public Space Banning laws. Finally, it will be considered whether or not a banning of the Muslim veil could be instituted within Canada.

La réforme de la justice en Haïti : un avenir prometteur?

Haïti a bien souvent fait les manchettes sur la scène internationale. Identifié comme étant l’un des pays les plus pauvres de l’Amérique, ce pays mène une lutte constante pour son développement. La montée de Michel Martelly à la présidence constitue une note d’espoir pour bien des Haïtiens et son programme gouvernemental semble présenter des points positifs pour la République. Effectivement, le président Joseph Michel Martelly, dans son programme de gouvernance, a identifié 4 domaines qu’il estime prioritaires pour le développement de la République d’Haïti : l’éducation, l’environnement, l’emploi et l’État de droit.
