Leslie C. Green Veterans Scholarship Awarded

Jan Dobrosielski has been announced as the 2015 recipient of the The Leslie C. Green Veterans Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a Canadian Armed Forces veteran, entering or pursuing first year legal studies, and intending to follow a career dedicated to international humanitarian law.

The Selection Committee felt Mr. Dobrosielski, awarded the General Campaign Star – South-West Asia, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and the 34th Canadian Brigade Group Commander’s Commendation for his service achievements, to be the ideal recipient of the third annual Award.

Mr. Dobrosielski initially distinguished himself in the Afghan theatre, which developed his passion for international humanitarian law. He joined the First Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) in 2005. Deployed in Kandahar Province, he was promoted while in theatre. He continued to advance in the RCR till his transfer to Reserves in 2009. Upon entering McGill University, he joined the Royal Montreal Regiment (RMR) as an Infantry Officer in 2011, with command of a Platoon. His participation in operations across Canada and the U.S. led to his appointment as the Unit’s Adjutant in 2013. He interned at the UN affiliated NGO International Centre for the Prevention of Crime prior to entering McGill University’s Faculty of Law in the fall 2015 and is its First Year Representative to The Canadian Bar Association.

The Leslie C. Green Veterans Scholarship was established in 2013 by The Canadian Council on International Law in honour of the late Leslie C. Green, a long-time friend of the Canadian Council on International Law and renowned international humanitarian law expert.

The $2,000 annual scholarship is directed towards candidates whose past activities and/ or future career plans suggest an intent and ability to make an active contribution to the development of international humanitarian law. Funds to launch The Leslie C. Green Veterans Scholarship, administered by The Canadian Council on International Law, are raised through the efforts of concerned individuals and funds such as The John and Barbara Poole Memorial Funds at The Edmonton Community Foundation. Further information and tax deductible donations to support the scholarship may be made through the link, The Canadian Council on International Law, a registered Canadian charitable organisation.
