The CCIL welcomes the appointment of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Louise Arbour as Canada’s 31st Governor General. Over the course of her distinguished career, she has served as Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, as well as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
In 2009, she was awarded the Read Medal by the CCIL in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the development, understanding, and application of international law. The John E. Read Medal is the CCIL’s highest award, established to commemorate the life and work of John Erskine Read, O.C., Q.C., a prominent Canadian lawyer and the only Canadian judge to have served on the International Court of Justice. The CCIL extends its warmest congratulations to Ms. Arbour.
